Big Beds- Which One to Convert To
"Hi, I'm Bianca. I have a 2 year old son, and am 12 weeks pregnant with our second child. We are currently trying to decide if our 2 yo should move into a big bed. He is very tall for his age, so could use the extra space, but has thus far shown no desire to leave his crib. On the contrary, he will sleep nowhere but his crib. He does not try to climb out of it and sleeps across the top, liking the feeling of security. We would like him to be in his new bed, whatever bed that may be, within the next couple of months, so there is no jealousy of the baby. We just aren't sure if we should buy a crib that converts into a toddler bed, a toddler bed that converts into a big bed, or just go straight big bed. What do people think?"

My 2 year old was the same way and we decided to put him right into a twin bed because we already had it and we didn't want to have to do another transition from a toddler bed to a bigger bed. We bought a double bed rail and we've never had any problems at all.
My son was like your little boy and loved loved his crib and would sleep no where else. We found out we were expecting baby #2 so we really needed to get our son out of the crib and into a bed. I asked him if he would sleep in a regular big boy bed and he said No, I sleep crib *sigh.
I sat and thought awhile and decided that maybe if he felt special and had his own toddler theme bed that he could get in and out himself that he would feel better about giving the crib over to the new baby. He loves thomas so we went with the thomas and bedding and set it up nicely in his room opposite the crib and when he went in his room and saw the bed he said THOMAS...I explained thats where he should sleep now and he said ok. I was shocked...hes been sleeping in it ever since and now says he sleeps with Thomas and baby sleeps in the crib..baby comes in 2 weeks and we are happy our little boy is happy in the toddler bed along with Thomas the train.
That's a good idea!
We switched Austin to a toddler bed, only because it was given to us. We WERE going to get him just a mattress, and put it on the floor. Then, in a couple years, get a frame for it to raise it up.
If you have a tall toddler, you might want to skit to the big bed.
