After your baby boy's circumcision your nurse will show you how to care for the area. Your baby may be restless for 2 or 3 hours after and may refuse a feeding. You can give him extra cuddles and feedings if he is interested. You can also let him suck on something for comfort.
- Always wash your hands before touching the newly circumcised penis.
- The circumcision usually heals in 3-4 days. During this time there may be yellow/white colored tissue around the site. This is a normal part of healing, no NOT try and rub it off.
- The first Vaseline gauze dressing wrapped around your babies penis should stay on for 4 hours, if possible. Your nurse will probably do the first dressing change for you to show you how.
- Change the diaper frequently
- For the first 24 hours apply a new dressing with every change. If the dressing is stuck, do not pull it off. Soak the dressing in warm water until it comes off easily.
- Gently wash the area with warm water, and lightly pat dry, no not rub, or use lotions or powders. Use only Vaseline, or another petroleum jelly, until the redness goes away.
- After 24 hours, leave the dressing off and use Vaseline on the penis with every change to keep the diaper from sticking to it. Keep using the jelly until the redness goes away.
- Check the penis every 4 hours until it is healed.
- Check for bleeding on the diaper and swelling on the penis after every change. If there is bleeding: put gentle pressure on the penis with folded gauze dressing. If bleeding does not stop with gentle pressure, call your doctor, or telecare.
- If there is a greenish or bad smelling discharge, there may be an infection and you should get your baby to a doctor.
- If your baby does not pass urine for 8 hours, call your doctor.
