I have tried to prepare my toddler for his last checkup by reading him a couple of books about going to the doctor. He seemed fine with it until we walked into the exam room the next day, when he started screaming and didn't stop until we left. How can I relieve the stress of future doctors appointments?

Did your child have something invasive done like needles or some other kind of uncomfortable exam? If that's the only thing that he has ever experienced at the doctor's office then he is always going to associate those feelings with going there. Maybe call the office and see if you can bring him there sometime during a slow time so he can have a more relaxed time there and see that it's not always a scary place to be.
That's a good idea, and any good doctor should be very welcoming of your idea to make your little one feel more comfortable.
