Infant/Toddler CPR

"Does anyone know if they offer CPR in town here? My daughter is always choking on her spit (teething) and even a pamphlet that shows proper technique would be helpful, because I am certain in the time it would take an ambulance to come here, it would be too late."

If you're going to learn it, learn it...don't just go by what you see on a pamphlet. You need to be able to practice it to learn it properly and if done wrong, you can actually do more damage than good. The St John Ambulance and Red Cross as well as the Heart and Stroke foundation run courses a fair bit but they are a first responder kind of course so you won't just be learning infant CPR, you'd be learning adult CPR, rescue breathing and the Heimlich for adults, children and infants.

Well I think that knowing the basics is better than knowing nothing at all. I am pretty sure I want to be doing something to save my baby instead of just sitting there doing nothing and waiting for the professionals to get to my home. It only makes sense to know the techniques whether it means learning it off paper or through a course I think.

Actually not really...you need to be shown proper positioning for compressions and how to make a good seal for breathing and when to do what because if you're off mark, you can do things like break ribs and puncture a lung or move a lodged object further down into the airway or force them to aspirate into their lungs. Besides that, in an emergency situation I would think it'd be much better to have learned the proper techniques instead of having to go grab a pamplet or something to help guide you through. If you've learned it, you can recall it in an emergency.

Ou, that's scary, it makes sense tho. Don't they try and tell you what to do tho when you are on the phone with 911?

They can, but it's virtually impossible to preform CPR and cradle a phone at the same time because you need both arms to do it properly. They could probably easily coach you through rescue breathing and probably the heimlich though and instruct you in what to look for to be able to tell which procedure you should do (ie check for pulse and breathing and how to open an airway)

I am certified through the red cross, so you can look into it there as well. I agree, do not go by a pamphlet, get certified!!!! I'm not sure how much it was because I got it through school, it was included in the course I was taking.

I think it is great that you want to know more about how to administer CPR in case of an emergency. I know that I had to call the ambulance once and it took them over half hour to arrive here. Thank God it was not a life threatening thing like choking or drowning.

To the individual who says your better off to wait. are you ever wrong. How could you say that? Someones child could die. It it were up to me, I would rather give it a shot than sit and do nothing.
