Medications For Labor

"Ok so one of your comments on my LAST questions made me send this one in lol. What meds did you use for labor, and what did it make you feel like. Any of you do it au naturel? Wish you hadn't of?"

My first was a section, so I had a spinal but this time around we're planning on a natural VBAC. Pain meds have their place in labor and delivery, but some of them can actually slow things down (like epidurals). If I do need something during my labor, I plan on trying non medication ways of pain relief like the jacuzzi tub, back rubs and breathing techniques but if I do need something more, I plan on using something injectable.

I had a 20 hour labour which ended in a C-sect. I started off with nu-morphine within the first few hours I arrived at the hospital.. followed a couple hours later with another shot. This took the edge off my contractions and helped my sciatic nerve pain simmer down.. or at least helped me simmer down! Haha. But everyone reacts to things differently remember! What works for one person may not work for another, except of course the epidural. I had the "laughing gas" later on that day, but it didn't make me laugh. Made me incredibly high though. I simply couldn't get enough of the gas.. but then I got the epidural after things got a little more heightened. That of course took all the pain away.. well except for the sciatic. That came back in full force and for some reason I could feel it despite the epidural.. don't worry though, like they say, Everybody is different and reacts differently and has different pain. But that is how mine went :)

I used the epidural for both, and I must say I highly recommend them. I napped during labor, while hubby went to grab a bite to eat. I have read that when a woman is in pain, lots of chemicals are released from her own body into her system, and this can actually affect the baby worse than pain medications can. Seems logical...

I hate it when people try and make me feel guilty when i tell them i might use meds. and they try and seem all high and mighty because they didnt use any, like they are bigger better women or soemthing.

The good thing about epidurals (when they "take" so to speak) is that they provide excellent pain relief without doping up the baby. The downside to them is that they can slow down your labor and make it very difficult for baby to be pushed out meaning that other interventions like a pitocin drip, forceps or a vacuum extractor may have to be used. Also, with an epidural, you generally need to have a catheter and an IV as well.

Here's a good link on pros and cons of epidurals: http://www.babycenter.com/refcap/pregnancy/childbirth/1489911.html

If you decide to use something injectable, you still have the option to get up and move around and other interventions are not usually necessary. The downside to these meds is they are systemic and can make for a sluggish baby but you have the option of trying a few different kinds whereas you pretty much only have one choice with an epidural and if you don't react well to it, you're screwed so to speak ;)

i thikn that the epi. gets a bad rap for no reason. i have 4 kids! epi for all and no prblms. pushed for no longer then 30 mins for the 1st 15 for the second, and the 3rd and 4th pushed for 5 mins!!!! so i suggest the epid!

Anonymous said...

Like I said, they're great when they take but they CAN cause problems. You were lucky in that it didn't with any of your kids, but they can and do with other people which is why you need to weigh your options carefully. Not to mention the risk factors associated with having an epidural, as small as they are they are still risk factors that don't come with other forms of pain control. I wouldn't suggest anyone go wholeheartedly into getting an epidural without really checking out what is involved and what can happen if something goes wrong because when things DO go wrong, they can be permenant.

I was in labour for 26 hours before having a section. I got an epidural at hour 10 I believe. It actually really freaked me out, you have to realize that you can't move anything but your arms and I started to panic. I guess I didn't like the feeling of not being in control. I think you should do some reading about epidural's and other pain meds and become fully aware of them. BUT! That being said, I think that you should remain comfortable, and if drugs are your choice go for it, don't let people make you feel bad. This is your choice, and your body. My husband was totally against me having an epidural.. haha but I was like okay you come switch places with me and tell me what you think! lol

Anonymous said...

your husband didnt want you to? whynot?

They'll give you some information when you get to L&D on epidurals to read through, but it's best to go in prepared for what you want and what you don't want...but it's also good to remain flexible. Personally, I'm going to try and go all natural but I know what I will and won't take as far as pain meds go. And having had an epidural/spinal before I know I'd never do it again unless I absolutely had to (like if I needed another c-section).

I was induced - after I started having contractions I could feel I did it natural. No epidural and it was about less than 2 hours. I was having contractions but couldn't feel them, then they broke my water and an hour and 15 mins after that my son was born. I do not regret it at all. I was not drowzy and had a great experience. My mother also did it natural with all three of her children (quick births run in my family). I am not good with dealing with pain, but I said I wanted to wait as long as I could until I used anything for pain, and when I asked for something for the pain it was two late and Micah was already to come out. They did not know he was ready because they said I did not act like I was that far along because when I had my contractions I didn't say anything (it hurt too much to talk or make a sound). But looking back i was glad I did it this way and I hope the next will be similar.

Oh yeah the reason I choose to try to wait before having an epidural was because I didn't want it to slow down the birthing process, luckly I didn't need one since it happened so quick. But when I asked for one and they checked how far along I was and they said there was no time and I had to start pushing I was scared the pain would be worse (because I had imagined it worse than it had been). But 15 mins of pushing and he was there. What I helped to deal with the pain was deep breathing and instead of stiffening my body I let it relax when I felt a contraction.

I had an epi with my son. I wouldnt have done it any other way but Im a huge wuss!!!
One of my friends did it all natural, her labor lasted 4 hours from start to finish... She said it was a huge thrill...
Next time I want a VBAC (csection with my son) and I will take the meds again.
Honestly who cares about what everyone else thinks, its about you and what will make this day easier for you. Noone else.

i had an epidural but i think if i had another child i would try to not have one i would much rather be able to walk around and stuff instead of laying there plus it really did make it harder to push--it took a lot more strength for pushing--im definitely not a big fan of the pain im the biggest wimp ever lol

see the reason i asked how it makes you feel, is cus i dont want to be high, i do not like that feeling at all. i want to be all there, and not laughing my head off like an idiot ( do not mean to offend anyone).

It's impossible to go on other people's reactions to medications if that's the answer you're looking for because everyone reacts differently to everything. For me, Morphine made me high as a kite but for you it may not.

Anonymous said...

yeah for me the morphine didn't even make me high..just sleepy!

Hi there! I have had 2 children, with my first I did it without any drugs, 11 1/2 hr labor with 1/2 hr delivery. I didn't think that it was that bad. But with my second I was in labor for about 6hrs and my delivery was about 15mins. With my 2nd I was in a lot more pain so I opted to have an epidural...honestly it was the biggest mistake of my life. They ended up puncturing the dura (surrounds your spinal cord) and I had spinal cord fluid starting to leak because of the puncture. This causes the most intense migraines you will ever feel. I went home and could not lift my head, take care of my baby or anything. I ended up having to go back in to have a blood patch done (take blood from your arm and put it into your back), but it cause such pain that I could barely walk for about a week. To this day I still get migraines (which I never used to get) and I have back pain that stays with me the majority of the time. In all honesty if I were to have another child I would do it without the drugs...yes it did hurt, but it was nothing compared to what I felt when they screwed up the epidural. Now I'm not trying to scare you or anything, I just thought that you might like to know what can happen with the epidural...although it is not a very common thing to have happen and the majority of women have epidurals and have no problems, and they are able to actually enjoy bringing a new life into this world. Either way if I were you I would do research on both medications and natural ways to help with pain. Maybe your doctor might have some suggestions as well. Good luck with everything :)

i was induced with my labour and though the pain wasn't too horrible i did take a Demerol which they gave with gravel because it could make me feel sick. it took the edge off the contractions and i slept for about 2 hours, the went it started wearing off i woke up. less than half an hour later i was pushing and about 20 or so minutes later i had my little girl. i went in not really wanting any pain meds but was open to them but i REALLY didn't want an epidural. as i was pushing the ob/gyn used something to freeze me down below but it was just cause i ended up needing to be cut, which i really didn't want to but it was preferred over tearing.

I was induced and had before researched all the options for pain relief during labor .. I knew i wanted to go as far as i could with the labor without pain medication, so i went in the whirlpool tub , and walked the halls continuously all day and night in the last 2 hours the pain was just too unbearable ( my body was shaking from being so tired) so I received the epidural and was very happy with it for the first hour , after that the pain came back as the baby was moving down , at the last minute the nurse offered me the gas and i had a couple of breaths of it while she was checking me to see how dilated i was ..as soon as she looking down she said "oh my goodness" the baby's head was right there, so she took the gas away from me ,,and i started pushing ..15 minutes later she was out , so i really didn't have any effect from the gas ..but the epidural really did help for me ..and i will probably ask for it again a bit sooner next time...

Hi, I just wanted to say have an open mind and dont say you will or wont use any medicine. I went in thinking that if i need it i will take it and if i can do it on my own its a bonus. i did my labor all natural and dont regret it at all. Mind you i had a fairly easier labor that only lasted a little over 7 hours. (baby was 8lbs 6oz) I would recommend taking advantage of the facilities at the hospital such as their birthing ball and or the tub. I used the tub and it was AMAZING. like i said just stay positive and keep an open mind...good luck

Anonymous said...

ok, so tell me about the tub and stuff please, did it help you and, and the ball too?

*Candace* said...

It helped me relax between contractions , but didn't minimize the pain during the contractions but it definitely was nice to relax for a bit ...

Anonymous said...

I am the biggest tub fan ever!!! I think the reason I didn't end up using any meds for my delivery was the fact that I moved around a lot. My back was killing me and the birthing ball positions didn't seem to help, so I headed for the tub. I sent my boyfriend out of the room and tried to relax. The tub is good because your body gets distracted by the different sensations. The bubbles are calming and you can move around which helps the baby drop. I got in and out of the tub at least twice and I was also in the shower. I also used the squat bar. . . . I felt awkward at first but it was fine in the end. No one person is the same, so someone else might say they hated the tub. You just never know. .. .

weird . . . . the anonymous person above who said have an open mind could have been me. I was the same, about 7 hours, 9 lbs 10 oz, no meds (but quite open to them) and lots of time in the tub.

see, i just dont want to try all these other things and then do the pushing with no med while in pain and suffering because i waited too long trying other things. i know everyin is diff but i am nervous, and it helps me to talk to you all.

It's going to hurt...that's why it's called labor and not a walk in the park. That's what my OB always told me. Unfortunately, you can get all the info and advice from everyone in the world but when it comes right down to it, it's not going to make a difference to your experience and no one can prepare you for how it is going to be because everyone's experience, threshold to pain and reaction to medication is entirely different as you can see from this thread alone. What worked for me is probably not going to work for you and what didn't work for me could very well work for you. You could have an absolutely horrible labor and be in the worst pain of your life, or it might not be that bad. Trying to stay calm and move around as much as you can while you're in labor is going to help you regardless of how you experience pain or what kinds of medications you will or won't use. Talk to your doctor and ask him/her what they have seen work best in their patients and what they recommend. They see more pregnant women laboring than anyone on here!

Hey i posted earlier about having an open mind. I agree the only reason i probably didnt have the meds either is because of the tub. It helped me focus my thoughts on something other then the contractions. for anyone who has been in the tub they know that the jets are STRONG hahha..I actually got in and laughed cause the jets scared me so bad...but all jokes aside. I also agree keep wmoving..especially walking if u can, I made my boyfriend walk the 3 flights of stairs while in labor..haha, no wheel chair for me. All jokes aside..you will know what to do when the time comes...let your body guide you and know that whatever pain u go through will be worth it once you see your beautifl baby. It truly is a pain that you forget the moment u see your child.

sorry i wrote so much!!!

My husband didn't want me to get an epidural because of the risks associated with them. He's a freak when it comes to that stuff.

I had started out with no medication in my labour as i wanted to try to use as less of medications as possible. The nurse i had offered me some fentyle to just take the edge off the contractions which did help but eventually i wanted the epidural, since the fentyle made me extremely tired. But i was told that it was too late for the epidural at that point. In the end i had a spinal and forceps delivery. For my next baby i have already chosen to have an epidural, becuase i felt soooo tired from the drugs, also i barely remember anything while i had the fentyle and the laughing gas didn't help me much. my son was also very sluggish which could have been from many factors but i'm sure the drugs had a big part. so i would suggest to anyone to talk to their OB about all the options and do some research to know what you would like.

I really wanted to go with no pain meds, but that didn't work out. I was in labor about 12 hours then needed an emergency c-section. I tried everything before I finally got the epidural!! haha. I made it natural for 8 hours, then I tried an injection of fentanyl (sp?). I found it really didn't do a whole lot. Took the edge off for about half an hour maybe. I also tried the laughing gas, and that just made me feel really dizzy, I didn't like it. Once I got the epidural, it was magic, lol. After 3 contractions I didn't feel a thing until a couple hours later when it started to wear off, but by then they were getting me ready to go to the OR not long after that so they topped it off with something stronger in there. I'm hoping for a VBAC next time, and will again TRY to do it without pain relief.

My first one I had an epidural and was tied to the bed with a catheter and hooked up to the monitor, and since it slowed down my labor they had an iv with pitocin. I was painless for about two hours, but when the baby moved lower the pain came back anyway, but I still couldn't feel the contractions enough to know when to push - it was just general pain. So I pushed and pushed and pushed until I tore and the baby came out. I was so exhausted from over-pushing I could hardly pay attention to my baby and practically passed out. My second baby was all natural, and I was so much more present. I knew exactly when to push b/c I could feel it, and since I pushed at the right time (and with the right force) I didn't tear. I felt everything, including the baby coming out, which was amazing! I think we all tend to think of labor as just painful, but it is also exhilirating. Trust yourself, trust your body, trust that you can do it and that countless women before have done it too. Welcome the contractions. They are helping your body birth your baby.

When I had my daughter I was convinced that I would have a natural birth. The pain started at about 1 in the afternoon but didnt get really bad until 7pm. The pain was horrible but I had told myself all along that I could do it!! I started to push at 8:50 and my daughter was born at 9:29. She came out so alert and ready to eat! If I ever have any other children, I will also do it naturally!!!(as long as I dont need a c-section).

i was so terrrified, i thought for sure i would end up needing an epidurell but when i went into labour it wasnt that bad, i was scared i would take something before the pain as at its worse and then it wouldnt help me, but i got fentanyl. the nurse gave me an iv and then when i decided i wanted the drugs she gave them and they worked imediatly but they wear off but the good thing is you can always get more, my daughter was sooo alert when she was born too, althought it does make some babies tired, also the drug made me happy, but i remember the whole thing... oh and i got a pudenal block when it came time to push,, its the best thing in the world!
