"anyone else having this issue? ever since the sun has been rising earlier so have my kids. Unfortunately this has been setting off a chain of events. they are cranky till they nap which is now in the morning, and they are tired way too early! HELP ME!! I dont want to get up at 6 am and don't want cranky kids. Oh i want to add that they have shades on their windows but this doesnt seem to be helping!"

if you are keeping the sun out of the room with dark shades then obviously the earlier waking doesn't correlate with the sun rising earlier.
you could hold off the nap until early afternoon that way they won't go to sleep as early. they are waking early because they are going to bed early.
I am having the same problem!! I hang a black blanket over Zakkie's window everynight so it will keep him in bed longer in the morning.. but no avail. It's been 5:30-6 every morning! He's a three year old that doesn't nap!! Because if he does nap, regardless of what time of day, no matter how early he naps, he will be up til 10-11 pm! If he stays up all day, he gets pretty cranky by 5:30/6 in the evening, and supper time is very difficult to get though! Then he crashed at 7. But it makes for a miserable bedtime :( I'm not sure what to do anymore! He's just wide awake and ready to go at 5:30! Oh and in the case if he naps, then stays up late, then goes to sleep, he will awake the next morning, JUST AS EARLY! I feel for you girl!!
Good Question. William still gets up early some days. I usually try to get them outside before bed, but somedays he just wants to get up early!

Have you tried keeping them up later at night?
My kids were actually doing the same thing. I find if they are just in the house, there isn't much I can do to keep them up, but If I take them outside, postponing their baths, then I am able to keep them up later at night.
To the first poster: Are you a mother? LOL If you are, you must be one of the lucky ones that her kids sleep in if they go to bed later!! I have talked to many many mothers and have come to the conclusion that 95% of kids don't sleep in even if they are kept up later.. they always wake up just as early!! Ahhh. Haha.
annabelle is like that sometimes too. sometimes she goes to bed early and sleeps in later and other times she stays up and gets up early..6am. i find that she sleeps a lot better if her belly is really full before bed tho she has toast and a huge bowl of cereal lol
Sorry to the anonymous poster than commented before me, I didn't meant to repeat what you said lol, we must have posted them simultaneously. HAHA
I guess I am just not that lucky! Boo
Kate,
Have you tried putting a kid's show on for him to keep him up a little bit.
Don't expect him to stay up way later on the first night you try, it will probably be like 15-30 min adjustments each day.
Or have you tried taking him outside for a bit to play in the evening in order to keep him up a little longer?
These are things that worked for me..
i think all kids are just different. some sleep good..some not so much lol my little cousin didn't even sleep thru the night till he was 2 1/2 years old! hed wake up for hours at a time in the middle of the night
but keeping annabelle up later never worked for me the later she goes to bed the earlier i am guaranteed to be woken up the next morning!!
i havent tried to take them outside to keep them up or anything like that yet. i just get so frustrated when they are irritable that i put them to bed when they are tired out. BUT i will try to do that and see how it works for me. my kids (2 and 3 and a half) watch tv in the mornings and its a part of the routine we do. so i am going to try and take them out in the yard first and then if that fails i might have to change thigns around some.
do you run in to get them right away? they might go back to sleep after a couple mins when they realize they are still tired. is one waking up the other? try running fans in their rooms to muffle any sounds that may be waking them.
what about waking them early from their naps?
Actually, changes in routine make sleep problems worse. It all boils down to circadian rhythms...or our body's normal 24hr clock. Things like sunlight and temperature impact how we sleep so when the temperature rises and the sun comes early, we wake earlier. Our bodies are able to readjust to these changes over a period of time so by doing things like keeping kids up later, you're actually trying to force their bodies to go against what they naturally do. Keep on with the same scheduale you do at bedtime and hang in there and your child will go back to their normal sleep routine. Once the weather changes to it being even warmer, you're probably going to see the same pattern emerge and then when it gets colder and darker, you'll probably find your child sleeping in a little bit.
With my son, he was doing the exact same thing...he'd be up at 6 with the birds and the sun but after about a week, he's getting closer to his normal 7-7:30 wake up time.
Try putting aluminum foil over the window. I hear that works quite well.
