Let Them Make A Mess, Or Hands Off At Mealtime?

So, every time I feed my 8 month old he is always grabbing at the bowl and the spoon. I know I read once that you should just let them try, but he literally just makes a mess. He upsets the bowl, and just bangs the spoonful of food and it goes EVERYWHERE. Not an ounce will make it in his mouth. My question is, should I just let him go at it, even if he is not getting any food into him? Or should I keep things away from reach until a later age, and if so, what age?

I would wait a bit longer perhaps, but it depends on how much cleaning up the mess bothers you!lol Seriously... With my own children I just kept correcting the behaviour, if they continued to overturn their bowl of food, or throw it I took it. They soon caught on to proper "table manners". (Even if they continued to eat with their fingers...as long as they were eating not playing it was o.k. by me!)

Put down some plastic and let him go. That's what did with Lauren. Alos, you can try giving him his own spoon as you feed with. So he's eating what you feed him, as well as whatever he can get to his own mouth.

Oh and three words: suction-cup bowl.

I agree with "that is how they learn"
My son is 15 months old and still gets days that he would rather play with his food than eat it, just last night we walked out of the kitchen with half the food in his tummy, half on me, and not a single drop on him... but hey its the fun of the learning process!

my daughter is about the same age, I give her her own spoon, along with some finger foods to eat. It's an instict for them to feed themselves, so I let her 'help'. yes it's a huge mess, which is why we do our solids meal before bedtime bath.
