Which Real Solids To Start With

"Hi All, I am wondering what first REAL foods you all fed your babies. I am pretty iffy when it comes to what I give my little guy because I am so scared he will choke on things. I have to really watch him when he eats and am always there with water to help wash things down. He has had toast, crackers, and teething cookies. Oh, he is 8 months. I would like to offer cut up cheese (cheddar or mozza) and cut up fruits and veggies. But I am still nervous about what he can actually chew with his four little teeth and gums. Thank You All"

The only way to know what he'll be able to handle is to let him try. Keep pieces small and give one at a time and let him try it out. That's the only way they learn.

What I really wanted to know is what first solids you all started with?

i think everyone probably started with diff. solids... just give him a diff. variety of stuff

Exactly. You can give him just about anything to try at this point.

I started with the same things as you, and then moved on to well cooked cubed (small) potatoes and carrots etc. It is recommended that if you want to offer cheese it is in very small pieces and only soft cheeses, like mozza etc. As for fruit, just make sure it is pretty soft, and again small. If the fruit you want to offer is not what you would consider soft, it will likely soften up, if you cook it :)

Hope that helps.

If you're going to do fruits, you should probably avoid the really citrusy ones because they can be hard on baby's digestive system before 9 months of age. Cut up grapes and banana wedges are great to start with. Cole really liked mandarin oranges at that age too and they never bothered him. Do you happen to make your own baby food by any chance? The reason I ask is that babies who eat home made baby food tend to transition to regular finger foods sooner and easier than babies who only eat jarred stuff because they are more used to the varying textures.

Some other finger foods we really liked at that age were mixed veggies that you buy frozen (they are already bite size!), dry toast with no crust, mandarin oranges, grapes or cherries cut up, bananas, goldfish crackers, mini marshmallows for a treat (but only give a couple at a time if you've got a shovel-it-in kid like mine lol), hard boiled egg (just the whites), cubed potatoe, torn up deli meat, and cubes of cheddar cheese are all I can think of right off the top of my head. We pretty much just tried everything with him eventually. He even used to eat mussels and shrimp and fried mushrooms! Now his new favorite is dill pickles.

Summer really liked to have cooked WW curly pasta cut up with small pieces of cheese( and sometimes a bit of pasta sauce which made for a messy highchair ) but other then that everything else she had was already mentioned

If food allergies tend to run in your family you have to be a little more careful with what you offer. For example, allergies to cows milk run in my family. So my daughter didn't have cows milk until she was 18 months. I gave her follow up "transition formula" after she was weaned at 13 months.
Her first foods were infant cereal once a day starting at 6 months. When she was used to the texture we moved on to pureed veggies and then fruits. I think she was closer to a year before I actually started giving her chunks of food. She didn't get any teeth til 10 months and then it was just the bottom two.
I guess it just depends on how your little guy is handling things(chewing, etc) and always keep an eye out for reactions...
