"Have any of you ever used cloth diapers? I am pregnant and am considering using cloth diapers for this child (I didnt with my first). Are their cleaning services for them in Fredericton? I have heard about them from my cousin who lives in Moncton, they pick up the diapers and clean them then drop them off again at your house. Anyway, if anyone has any input on this topic I would really like to hear from you and your experience with them :) thanks."

I'm not going to be much help, but just wanted to say that I know you can buy some that are soooo darn cute! If I didnt have to clean them I would totally do cloth diapers but just the idea grosses me out. My sister in law uses the service but shes in Halifax, Ive never heard about it in Fredericton... Good luck!
I have never used them, but I do know that they are easier to use than they used to be. They have velcro for pins and you can buy the inserts that are flushable. They come on a roll kinda like toilet paper, so I am told :)
I used them for both my kids... they are now 4 1/2 and 3 ... glad that I did... there is no service here in Fredericton so I did all the cleaning my self... it's not that bad....would be worse if they were your own kids..
I got them from sears.. expensive if i know somone I would of gotten then second hand but everone around here is too stuck in their ways to change and everyone stuck up their noses and said i was stupid to do it...
You could always try ebay to buy some. I would do some research as to what other moms prefer though and maybe only buy a couple of each brand before you really invest money. I do think that in the long run they would save ALOT of money, especially if you have more than 1 child.
If you can work a sewing machine, I guess they are pretty easy to make!
That's where a friend of mine bought hers (EBay). They come in some really cute designs too!
Not only are they cost effective, they are also great for the environment! I bet about 50% or more of our trash is diapers.. Yuck :P
Our daughter is now 5 months old and we have been using cloth diapers since she was born. We had found it pretty easy - have to wash a load of diapers once every three days, and if you can hang them out, they get dry and bleached at the same time. Someone made us a bunch of flat flannel ones, for which we bought covers. We have also experimented with several different fitted kinds - you do have to do a little experimenting I think to figure out what fits your baby and what works for your lifestyle. Some friends have used pocket diapers (like FuzziBunz) and loved them - they're pretty easy. Anyway, there are several websites with a lot of good info - here are a few links:

Aside from the landfill issue with disposable diapers, I also think that all the chemicals, bleaches etc. that make them so super-absorbent can't be good for a baby's skin. I definitely think they're worth the extra effort, and I'm not convinced they're more expensive in the long run. Good luck!!
I have friends who use cloths and they simply hold the clean end of the diaper in the toilet and flush.... gets rid of all of the mess and then you can just throw them in the wash.
I am hesitant because we go on a lot of walks, outings, etc. and for daycare... will daycares change cloth diapers? With a disposable you can just chuck it, but you would need to have storage with you for the soiled diaper when you are out. Would it be a bad idea to use both? Has anyone tried that?
i have a friend who has used cloth diapers on her son from the beginning but for daycare she had to switch him to disposable when he was 3. but i think she just used disposable at daycare only

I saw this ad for cloth diapers, its in Saint John but thought I'd pass it on.
I used cloth diapers on my daughter. We were really on a budget, so I started buying them when I was pregnant. I had a bucket with a lid, and I laundered them myself. It's really easy and I would do it again no hesitation; especially when I see how much diapers cost! Ouch!
We use cloth diapers on our 2 month old and have used them from the time we brought him home from the birthing center. We use unbleached cloth diapers, use covers that close up with Velcro and use these cool little things called, "snappis" to close up the diaper. In other words, NO PINS. We have a plastic garbage can container next to the changing table that we drop the diapers in when soiled. We add a few sprinkles of baking soda to handle the odor and that's it.
We do use disposables when we travel, especially overnight. As for washing, we live in a condo so our water costs are covered by our home-ownerns' dues which is nice. We soak the diapers first and then wash in hot with Arm & Hammer detergent. It's simple and it's nice to not have to pay for disposables on a regular basis. Our son doesn't get a rash at all either--and I don't honestly know if this is making a difference or not, but it is the case with us.
I started out with pampers... and switched to cloth... we now have 2 in cloth and i LOVE THEM. For starters, you will spend between 400-800 (depending on the route you go) as opposed to 3000 for pampers... (they say you spend 1000/year on pampers). They are cute, easy to use, better for baby and environment... and really not a lot of work at all! PLUS you can reuse them on your next kids, so if you have 2-3 you are really saving alot!
We opened a store in Market square (Stylin Mama, Baby & Tot) and sell the best diapers... and offer free diapering classes (then you get 15% off)... I was ctuality surprised at how many moms are switching over and at the ## of diapers we are selling. With the big green movement, its really coming back! PLUS you can buy bio soft liners, so you line diaper with a flushable liner, so you can pick up the poo and flush it... its really that easy!
