23 Months

How your toddler's growing
By 23 months your child can probably hum and sing, and be able to say 50+ single words, may be able to combine words, and identify up to 6 body parts by naming. Already an artist, she can probably copy circles and create line drawings. So encourage her with a big box of crayons and plenty of paper. She's also beginning to understand opposites, like tall woman, short woman or big cake, little cake.

Now you can have a real conversation with your toddler, you'll know if her speech and hearing skills are on track. If you've any doubts, see your GP or health visitor. Early speech therapy can make the world of difference.

Your life: easing bedtimes
You'll probably want to think about switching your toddler to a big bed before he's able to climb out of the crib on his own. When you make the transition, it'll be difficult for a little while - you might find him popping out of bed just after you leave the room or making nocturnal visits to your bed. But give him time and he'll settle in to his new sleep arrangements. It may be a good idea to revisit ways to establish good sleep habits at this time.
