New Study Results: Kids & TV

Yet another study aimed at settling the never ending debate on the affects of children watching TV has recently been published in the Journal of Pediatrics.

The group of children were evaluated on their viewing time amounts, and ages over a period of 3 years.

The research concluded that if children who watch TV cut back on viewing time by age of 5 1/2, they did not exhibit problems, and were not delayed in comparison to those who watch little or no TV.

Study author Kamila Mistry stated that "reducing viewing to acceptable levels can reduce the risk of behavioral and social problems."

The group recommends little or no TV at all for children under two, and for children two and older, less than two hours per day. In addition the study also showed that children who had a TV in their bedrooms, were at higher risk for behavior and social problems, and had trouble sleeping.

I 100% agree that children should not have TVs in their bedrooms.

We keep the tv on all the time at our house, but when I think she's had enough, I flip to something I want to watch , like the news. She loses interest almost immediately and goes and plays.

I agree with no tv in kids' bedrooms. I like speding time with Lauren and if she had a tv in her room, we'd never see her!

The TV is on all the time in our house too and I think that's sort of desensitized him to it because he doesn't sit and stare at it the whole time it is on like these studies are implying kids do. Certain things will catch his eye and he'll stop and watch for a min or two and he does have his favorite shows that he will sit and watch but that's about it. The whole notion of plunking kids in front of the tv and having them stay there for hours and hours certainly doesn't apply in my house!

See I think that one thing people ARE doing wrong when it comes to kids and TV is just sitting their kids there. I think with kids under 2 especially that parents should be watching age appropriate shows WITH the child, and telling them what things are. I don't know if any of your children watch Baby Einstein, but that is all my 1 year old really watches. Parents today ARE using the TV as a baby sitter and not as a teaching tool.
