Makeshift Playthings

Sure, all those fancy new toys you buy for the holidays will entertain your baby, at least until the battery runs out. So when it's time for the next new thing, save yourself a few bucks and look no further than your kitchen cabinets!

A mixing bowl & Wooden Spoon
Your baby will love when you... Hide a favorite toy underneath, making it appear and disappear. Or let him bang away on different sized bowls or pots with a big spoon.

Small toys and wide-mouthed plastic jar
Your baby will love when you... Show her how to put them in the jar and dump them again.

Colorful socks
Your baby will love when you... Put the socks in your hand so that they stick out like a flower.

She'll learn... to recognize the names of the colors you tell her early on, and set a good foundation for talking later.

Flashlight
Your baby will love when you... Turn off the lights, and shine a flashlight on a wall (not directly in your baby's eyes, of course).

She'll learn... Eye strength. Following the light will strengthen her eye tracking skills and muscle coordination.

Music
Your baby will love when you... put the music on and dance around with or for your baby. Or bounce baby on your knees to the beat.

The telephone
Your baby will love when you... call familiar voices and just let him listen to someone he knows like grandparents or daddy.
