Starting Cereal

I just started to give rice cereal to my 6 months old son but he doesn't like it. I don't know if it's because he is not hungry or he doesn't like it. I try to add more water but he did not want it. I usually try after his bottle, should I try to give him cereal when he drank half his bottle? He drink about 7-8 oz at the time, should I make smaller bottle? Thanks for your help!

He may just not like it. Have you tasted it? The stuff is nasty! I tried with both my kids and neither of them took to it so we went straight to first foods.

It might taste better with formula(I assume your not breastfeeding if he is drinking from a bottle)instead of water. I did rice cereal for a week until it constipated my daughter then switch to barley which she enjoyed more and it didn't bother her digestion. I believe the latest recommendations are to start with meat or veggies.

My son is 6 months also, I give him his cereal in between bottles. If your son is drinking 7-8 oz of a bottle, he might already be full. Good luck.

I would not recommend putting it in the bottle. You need to get your baby used to the texture of foods whole he is still young. Maybe try making it thick. My son would not eat his cereal until i started making it thicker.

Try the cereal first and then give him 4 oz of formula afterwards.

When I started my daughter on rice cereal I would only give her a couple of tablespoons at a time. I mixed it with formula and made it quite runny. She never had an issue with the cereal (she actually preferred it to the barley). I wouldn't recommend making it to thick until he is able to swallow without difficulty. You could also try giving your son the cereal about an hour after he has had his bottle. Remember this is new to him and it may take a little while until he gets used to it. Best of luck!

My son would never eat rice cereal either. He loved both oatmeal and barley though. I'd try one of those and see how it goes. And definitely mix it with formula rather than water.

I always feed the bottle first and then the solids, even if it means he only eats a few spoonfuls of solids. They still get most of their nutrients from breastmilk/formula until 1 year of age, so I think it's important that they not fill up on solids and then refuse their milk.

Thanks for your advises. I mix the cereal with formula and give it to him after he drank 6oz. After the cereal, he finish is bottle (7 or 8 oz). We started veggies yesterday and we don't have any problem! I talked to my doctor and the recommendation for starting solid is cereal, veggies, fruits and meat. Nothing have change!
