What exactly do they do at preschool? (seems like a stupid question, I know) But Some parent's schedules or finances do not allow for taking a child to preschool. What kinds of things can we do at home with them so they are getting the same type of learning?

I don't think its a stupid question at all. Unless you have gone to sit in on a preschool "class" then you really have no way of knowing. I don't think it's anything profound that they do there. I think the main thing Is a structured day plan. As well as social interaction with other kids. Which your child can also get by going to a playgroup with children their own age. They sit and have a story time. They have a free play time. Im sure they go over letters and numbers, and teach children how to spell their names. All things I think you can do on your own if preschool is not in your budget or doesnt fit into your daily routine.

I love flash cards with my kids, and alpha books. My son who is 3, knows all the words on the back of the flash cards (with no pictures) and can spell his own name. We have been doing counting since he was very young, I made him a colorful chart and he learned to count to 25 that way at 2 years old. Parents can do anything that a preschool teacher can do, it just takes repetitiveness and an interested child! :)

I'm debating sending Cole to preschool but I'm going down to 3/4 time at work so finances may not allow it at this point so I googled "home preschool curriculum" and a whole whack of ideas came up. There are all sorts of themes and activities and I found a bunch of printable worksheets for letters, numbers, shapes and colors. Look around and see what you can find! I also found some workbooks with that stuff in it at the dollarstore from Bob the Builder and the Backyardigans and they come with stickers. Cole got some Lightning McQueen pencils, erasers and crayons from there too and he takes his things to the sitter's and does his "homework" with her girls when they get home from school. I don't think it's going to be as good a thing as actually going to preschool but I figure at best, he'll be familiar with some stuff.

we are moving to the area - have you heard much about the YMCA?? I like how they have swimming one day a week??

We went to the preschool center and can get a space - but Im worried its on such a busy street and too close to the street... does not look like it would be good for drop off/pick ups??

Has anyone heard about UNB preschool?

Hi,

My husband and I (and our 3/12 yr. old son) are moving back home to Fredericton this fall after living away for 14 years. I'm wondering how hard it will be to get my son into a daycare program (2-3 days/week)? We live in Toronto and the wait lists for preschools and daycares is long. I'm still on a daycare list for my son that I put my name on when I was 6 months pregnant! I hope it's not that bad back home. Any suggestions or advice would be very much appreciated.

Take care,
Lynn

Hi, my son will be 3 1/2 in the fall and I am looking for a program to start him gradually. I would also like to get him with other 3 year olds that will be going to the Harvey Elementary School. Anyone have any suggestions??! Thank you very much!

Pre-School Centres - staff are generally good but be aware they are a non-profit (technically) and perpetually fundraise for everything they can think of. Not sure what the weekly rates cover given the continuous begging. They also use a 15-passenger van to transport the children to events, the same one that has been banned in NB for school children as a result of the tragic BHS accident. They refuse to replace or make other arrangements and instead choose to hide behind the technicality that daycares are not covered under that law - so it seems this population is less important than school children. This despite ongoing complaints and concerns raised by parents. It seems to me that if you're in the business of transporting our children, you do it right or not at all. Heck, as parents we can't put them in a vehicle without them being strapped in nine ways to heaven (which they should be), but they get a pass? Please make sure you educate yourselves on the policies and facilities before you enroll your kids!

Does any one have any experience with Northside Daycare? They have a spot available but I don't know anyone who has used them. Thanks!

All PreSchool Centre facilities are to be avoided - sub standard care that have had multiple complaints lodged against it over the years.

Serious Fun Childcare is a new preschool/daycare that opened this summer in New Maryland (about 5 minutes from downtown). Last I heard they had spaces but you might want to check ASAP. seriousfunchildcare.webs.com

Mothers care education centre on knowledge park drive is an amazing centre for children. The staff members there are all excellent. I highly recommend them

I would not recommend the New Maryland Children's Center. Classes are bigger than they legally should be (40+ in the afterschool room designed for 25).
I would also avoid the Preschool centers - dirty, dingy, not well cared for.
Would recommend: Little Geniuses on Northside or Serious Fun Childcare on Southside.

I am looking for a holistic type daycare: a place that serves nutritious organic/local fruits and veggies; wholesome gluten free lunches; uses all natural cleaning products; has an atmosphere of choice: free feeding/sleeping times; children involved in practical life skill building (like helping prepare snacks, cleaning, etc) and a place that nurtures the whole child

the preschool centre does have some good qualities however some of the staff spend a lot of time texting on their cell phones and I have picked up my child a found that the whole class was left with just the TA. the class is supposed to have two teachers and a TA. when you bring this type of concern up at the office they do nothing and I felt as though as a parent I was treated differently as the office staff told the teachers to watch me as I was a trouble maker parent. I am just so glad my child will be starting school and I will no longer need daycare.

I wanted to share my experience with Bookworm Preschool. My son did two years there and my daughter just started her first. Miss Lee takes 3 and 4 year olds (as well as after school), is licensed, has her ECE and it's an awesome in-home environment. She follows the kindergarten curriculum but is very play based. Just wanted to share in case someone is looking for a great stepping stone from being home to school.

Hi,

My name is Juliane Nowe and I teach yoga classes and programs in Fredericton and Oromocto. I teach kids yoga and was wondering if this was something you or anyone you know would be interested in having?

Thanks!

If anyone has used Mother's Care Education Centre I would appreciate your feedback. We are thinking of sending our daughter there and I'm nervous about leaving her.
