well my mom was crule when it came to stopping me and my brother from sucking our thumbs she would put tabasco sauce on our fingures before bed so when we sucked on them it would burn our mouths Shocked well now my brother and I can eat anything spicy and it not even fase us haha but I would never do that to my children. I don't know what to do about that ither than telling them to stop. What I tell the kids that I take care of when they pick there nose is everytime I see them do it they have to go wash there hands with soap and count to 30 eventually they stop cause they would be washing every 2 min haha it worked haha but the thumb sucking I dunno??? Confused
My son sucks his thumb and I think it's fantastic. He can soothe himself. I am not to worried about the over bite everyone's different and both sides of the family have great teeth.
Our daughter sucks her thumb and it's affecting her teeth and the inside of her mouth. She's 4 1/2 and it's getting to be an issue as far as the dentist is concerned.
It's also a problem since she has her left thumb in her mouth in public and in the van sometimes before we've had a chance to wash her hands! She's picked up her fair share of viruses that way.
It wasn't bad when she was very small, but now I just want to find a way to get her to break the habit.
I was lucky I have 4 children, and none were thumb suckers, but it is a terrible habit. My niece and nephew both did it. And even though it's convenient and even kind of cute when they are infants, it is actually very disgusting once they start school! And you can't throw their thumb away, or tell them the big boy/girl story "you're big now it's time we give it to another little baby to make them happy!" The nail polish "stop-bite" at the pharmacy can be very helpful, but as with anything with kids you have to be more persistant then they are!!
well as i dont know if yu child is a boy or girl this may be totally off.. this is what my mom did for my sister (she sucked her fingers till around 7 years old) my sister had wanted to wear nail polish but my mom said not until she stopped sucking her fingers.. so if you have a girl maybe ask her if she's like to wear nail polish or even just expose her to it so she'll want to and try that.. but if you have a boy than i am of no help..sorry.. i dont have the thumb sucking problem with my daughter.. i've always took her fingers out when she was younger if she started to .. (which was maybe 5 times)

You can get this bitter tasting stuff from the pharmacy that is used to help people stop biting their nails. You could try that.
